Art Deco Delight

The guide James met us in the lobby of the Art Deco Essex House Hotel - we were the only takers. He gave us a brief history of Miami and its architectural heritage then showed us around the Art Deco stylings in the hotel and out. We then walked slowly around several other hotels in Collins and Washington Avenues finishing much further up Ocean Drive. He tried not to get distracted by all the noise coming from hundreds of Argentinians watching the live World Cup Final at 10 in the morning. Although the fascias of the hotels rewarded looking up at the skylines, the best part of the tour was the interiors, even going up to the roofs of two of the buildings. He even took us inside the Wolfsonian. Our favourites were the original 1930s lifts and a fantastic letterbox. James was friendly and informative throughout.

Lots of history and goodly # of sites
Wish there was more time to see even more. Was very sad to see so many buildings painted just white. Sorry loss for us all. Bravo to the woman who helped saved the remaining buildings

Great walk around the art deco district

Spent a lovely morning exploring Miami's art deco district with our guide Janinha and our small multi-national group. Janinha was an excellent guide who was clearly passionate about her subject and the tour was pitched just right with a good mix of walking and talking. Highly recommended.
Interesting and informative tour

I had done this tour in 2012 with the same company so as I was back in South Beach with different friends, I booked this as a surprise for the group. The booking was initially easy but then there were several issues with availability around my booking which made it quite stressful and it wasn't clear to me if the tour would actually go ahead. Nevertheless, we turned up at the starting point and luckily, James was there to meet us! James had really great knowledge of the area and happily answered all of our questions. We saw different buildings on the tour to ones I had seen the first time so I would recommend the tour if you are in the area for a second time. The group really enjoyed the stories and the passion James had for the art deco buildings and pieces. We all came away looking at the buildings differently and sneaking into hotel lobbies for a peak!
